Measures Your Website Must Have

Website security nowadays is a big deal, simply because malicious software and a ton of other threats that could hamper your site's operations. Remember, websites are the online version of the company or business – having it breached by viruses, worms or hackers is like having a group of robbers storm your building take your earnings and merchandise. That said, your website must possess tools and software that could protect it from these threats. Why? Well, let's say that there are countless possibilities if your website is healthy, running and functioning well.

Probably the most basic type of website security software, firewalls are not really walls of hot, scorching flames, but they are simply a barrier that keeps malicious software and hackers out. Basically it can be a program or a piece of hardware that filters the incoming information from the Internet. For example, a malicious piece of data, traffic or information is trying to infect or connect to your system. Without a firewall, this data will go through and wreak havoc on your computer. If the barrier is existent, the data will be flagged, barring its entry. It uses three methods in order to control the traffic that enters, which are:

  • Packet Filtering – this involves packets (defined as a piece of a message transmitted over a packet-switching network) being analyzed by the firewall. It is then either accepted or rejected based on the set rules that are set by the user/s.
  • Proxy server – basically, it allows the firewall to retrieve information from the Internet and sent to the requesting system, which in this case is the user. It also effectively hides the user's true network addresses.
  • Stateful Inspection – much like packet filtering, this method is used by firewalls to inspect the packets, but only their characteristics, not their contents. After which the packet is then sent to the database filled with trusted information. It is then compared and if it somehow yields a match, then it is allowed through. If not, it is barred from entering.

Remember, firewalls can protect up to hundreds of computers at the same time. Having them protecting your website is highly important, given that it prevents incoming traffic coming from malicious sources. This is your first line of defense against foreign invaders, so be sure to have it installed!
